Digital transformation and Wonderware seminar
On a Thursday morning in August, we gathered together at Tampere Technopolis for an early morning coffee. The plan for the day ahead was to exchange thoughts and ideas about digital transformation and industrial manufacturing. At this one-day seminar, Roima and Klinkmann offered insight into how AVEVA’s Wonderware product family supports digitalization. An important part of the seminar was formed by the case presentations in which Roima’s customers shared some first-hand experiences.

Over the course of their careers, Roima’s MES experts Juuso Lehtonen and Teppo Haantie have been involved in numerous digitalization projects in multi-site environments. At the seminar, they stepped on to the stage to share some concrete examples of global digitalization and MES programs and their complex nature.
We also had the pleasure of welcoming Tiina Lehtovirta of HKScan to the stage. Tiina shared her experiences of how to successfully implement complex information system projects. She introduced an interesting analogue to the challenging sailing across the Atlantic Ocean – another type of venture that she has first-hand experience of. The skipper of the sailboat, i.e. the project manager, has great responsibility for controlling the big whole and steering the crew to collaborate in a controlled manner towards achieving the project’s goals. This also applies to the success of all information system implementation projects.
We also got to hear a presentation from Nokian Tyres. In his talk, Antti Rautanen reminded us that also in MES projects, the cost-efficient manufacture of tires is at the center of focus for them – not the information system or other surrounding operations.

It is crucial that the focus and goal remain clear throughout the project, even if projects sometimes are long and challenging. This particular digital transformation project will go on for a while longer.
Integrating data into decision making
Yet another inspiring presentation was that of Janne Rikassaari of Klinkmann. Janne shed light into how existing data can be efficiently used in decision making and how digital data can and should be collected from different systems using Wonderware product family solutions. Janne also told us about the requirements for real-timeliness of monitoring software and about the software’s reaction capability in the context of HMI/SCADA.
Before cocktails, Sanna Porola of Roima tapped into the secrets of production master scheduling and detailed scheduling as part of MES projects. Roima’s Arto Pellonpää continued by offering insight into the question of when warehouse management and intralogistics should be taken into account in MES projects.

During the day, we also got to hear about how the standardization of processes and best practices shape the business landscape in the era of digitalization. Concrete examples further demonstrated that what should be at the center of the change is not technology but instead humans and the ways of working – technology is merely the enabler of the change.
At the seminar, we got to share our knowledge about the most recent technology trends and about how the solutions of the Wonderware software family support digital transformation as part of business development. At the end of the rewarding day, Roima and Klinkmann demonstrated the use of Wonderware’s solutions with demos.

Big thanks to all the companies and experts that helped us organize the event – based on all the positive feedback we received, we will definitely be organizing more of these meetings in the future!
